2007 Victim Advocate Training Program

 

The following advocate training program is open to interested members of the public. Admission to sessions is free of charge but pre-registration is required. The only exception is a two day Suicide Intervention Workshops where a fee of $110 is applicable to non-BVVSA volunteers. For more information or to registration, please call 760-0197.

Session 1

Program Orientation/Victim Rights in the
Criminal Justice System

Wednesday, September 26, 2007 7pm - 10pm

Banff RCMP

Peter Quinn, Cst Tim Diebel

Victims do have rights within the criminal justice system. Discover what Victim Impact Statements, claims for restitution and financial benefits are. Other topics include the role of a victim service advocate; orientation to working with the RCMP; and community resources.

Sudden Death

Brian Pickering

The death of someone can be a painful and difficult experience. This session focuses on grief and bereavement, providing practical tips for caregivers. Brian is a grief counselor with the Rocky View Hospital.

Crisis Intervention

Saturday, September 29, 2007 9am – 1pm

Canmore Provincial Building

Peter Baylis, Peter Quinn

This workshop will discuss victims’ reactions in crisis situations as well as how to successfully intervene with appropriate and timely support. Peter Baylis is a clinical supervisor with Calgary Health Region Mental Health Services. Peter Quinn is the program director of the Bow Valley Victim Services Association.

Sexual Assault

Wednesday, November 7, 2007 7pm – 10pm

Deb Tomlinson, Cst. Adele Zenko

Deb is the interim executive director of Calgary Communities Against Sexual Abuse. She will discuss the facts and myths surrounding sexual assault, the emotions victims are left to deal with, alternatives available for survivors, and how others can help. Cst Zenko is a member of the Canmore RCMP and will provide a police officer perspective in investigating sexual assault cases.

Court and the Criminal Justice System

Wednesday, October 3, 2007 7pm – 10pm

Michael Ewenson

Join our Crown Prosecutor, as he demystifies the criminal justice process. Michael will walk participants through the court process beginning with the laying of charges and concluding with sentencing.

Session 8

Property Crimes and Self Care

Wednesday, November 14, 2007 7pm – 10pm

Canmore Recreation Centre

Cst. Kevin Misiwich, Pat Doucette

Cst Misiwich is a member of the Banff RCMP and will discuss the best ways to prevent a break and enter from occurring. How can you look after yourself when you have been involved in a stressful and difficult situation? Pat Doucette is a Registered Psychologist practicing in the Bow Valley.

Session 4

Stalking and Harassment, Peace Bonds
and Protection Orders

Wednesday, October 10, 2007 7pm – 10pm

Banff YWCA

Cst. Eric Nelson

Cst Nelson is a member of the Calgary Police Service’s, Domestic Conflict Unit. This session provides a profile of harassers, stalkers and discusses how victims can be assisted through this period. Additional information will be provided on the types of protection orders that are available to victims.

Session 9

Suicide Intervention Training

November 24 – 25, 2007 9am – 5pm

Rimrock Resort Hotel

Learn how to recognize and assess the risk of suicide, intervene effectively and help individual’s access community resources. This two day workshop will provide caregivers of all backgrounds the skills to provide emergency suicide intervention.

Domestic Abuse

Wednesday, October 17, 2007 7pm – 10pm

AADAC Office, Canmore

Janet Wagner

Learn how to provide information and assistance to individuals in abusive situations from our internationally renowned presenter. Janet’s company, Exploring Solutions, provides counseling for those in abusive situations and does extensive training for those in the field of domestic violence.
